Independent Learning

Independent learning at MAP aims to develop mastery of each subject as students build upon their key knowledge and become confidently able to communicate this. Students will use your Scholar’s Guide to self-quiz for 15 minutes per subject each evening other than Maths SPARX, Unifrog, Languages Quizlet, Poets and Readers and Student Development.

Reading

At MAP, we know the importance of literacy as it crucial to a student’s overall academic development and personal growth. Due to this, literacy serves as the foundation of our school day and at the heart of everything we do. Students read every day in their tutor time; students have independent reading books and complete Sparx Reader; we offer reading clubs; our library allows students to borrow some of the best books ever written; students read subject-specific texts in lessons; teachers dedicate lesson time to explicitly teaching new vocabulary; they regularly test students’ knowledge of key vocabulary in drills and our teachers support students in developing both their written skills and oracy.

As part of our comprehensive Literacy strategy, our independent reading programmes aim to foster a love for reading and inspire our students to become lifelong readers and critical thinkers.

Reading routes. Our independent reading programme runs alongside our SPARX reader provision. This exciting programme aims to further enhance our students' reading experiences and expand their literary horizons.

Students are able to choose their independent read book from one of our exciting reading routes. To help them in this process, each student can use the MAP Canon Catalogue (below) to browse through and help them navigate the different options available.

Students who read and complete any book will receive sticker for their Reading Routes card and will be rewarded with badges, special breakfasts and other treats. Students can also swap between routes as they want, however a completed route is a fantastic achievement and will receive special recognition.

We are looking forward to hearing all about your child’s reads! Please find below our MAP Canon Catalogue and a link to a form for your child to request their book any time.
