At our school, we are proud to have a variety of animals that play an important role in supporting our students’ well-being and learning. Our two academy dogs, Watson and Wilma, greet families every morning during thresholding, providing a calm, friendly start to the school day. Throughout the day, the children get to interact with them, which has been shown to help reduce stress and promote emotional well-being.

One of the most exciting roles for our dogs, is the Paws to Read programme where Watson and Wilma help children develop a love for reading. By reading to the dogs, students feel supported and encouraged, creating a relaxed, non-judgmental environment where they can build confidence in their reading skills.

In addition to our beloved dogs, we also have chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs that are cared for by the children. Having these animals at school teaches responsibility, empathy, and kindness, while providing plenty of opportunities for hands-on learning. The animals also offer moments of joy and connection throughout the day, giving children a chance to unwind and enjoy the calming presence of animals in their lives.

We believe that animals in school provide so many benefits—boosting mental health, supporting learning, and fostering a nurturing environment for our students to grow and thrive.
