MAP is officially launched!
The world’s first man to sail solo around the world has opened the UK’s first Marine Academy in Plymouth.
Sir Robin Knox-Johnston gave an amusing and inspirational speech on Saturday as Marine Academy Plymouth (MAP) was officially launched in St Budeaux.
Hundreds of visitors, of all ages joined in with activities throughout Saturday's event, which included sports, science, robotics displays, sailing demonstration equipment and live music.
The world-renowned seafarer told his audience there were huge career opportunities based on marine activities, both on land and at sea.
He told the audience: "Follow your own advice and instincts; it doesn't matter what you do so long as you're the best at it."
Sir Robin then unveiled a striking commemorative plaque that now has pride of place in the Academy’s newly refurbished reception.
Professor Mary Watkins, Deputy Vice-chancellor of the University of Plymouth, told visitors of the strong links the academy would have with the marine and maritime industry and its clear vision which would include opportunities in engineering and tourism.
Courses with a marine theme are being developed jointly with the university and Cornwall College, which will send staff to the Academy. MAP will also have access to both institutions’ facilities, lecturers and students.
The Academy's Principal, Helen Mathieson, thanked parents, staff and students for their hard work and enthusiasm for the Academy's opening.
She said: "The sponsors’ vision is very clear — to tap into the potential of a maritime city. Our links with sponsors will provide real work experience opportunities to create learners who are self-confident with the ability to speak for themselves."
The specialist state-funded school is sponsored by the University of Plymouth, Cornwall College and Plymouth City Council.
