MAP's Futsal bid at Birmingham

Marine Academy Plymouth's Year 7 Futsal squad made the trip to Birmingham to compete in the national finals after winning the Plymouth and regional heats. All the teams competing were regional winners from all over England. The MAP team were the only side to reach the event from Plymouth in all the age groups after the regional stages in Swindon.
The team played in four league matches. The Marine Academy side missed out on the group stages finishing 3rd in the group.

The side lost 2-0 in their first game to eventual winners George Spencer from the East Midlands, before battling back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Nunnery Falcons from the West Midlands with Harry Frost scoring both.

Needing two wins from the final two games to ensure a semi-final place the MAP side dominated their next match against London based Ruislip Town FC only to go 1-0 down. A Matty Edwards equaliser set the team up for a victory but the Ruislip keeper pulled off some fantastic saves to keep MAP at bay and the players were caught a minute from time to concede a penalty to cruelly lose 2-1.

The Marine Academy Players approached the final game determined to finish with a victory and seal 3rd spot in the division and a terriffic performance against Greenacre from the East England region ensured a 3-1 victory with Connor MaCauley, Lewis Phillips and Matty Edwards grabbing the all important goals.

Marine Academy Plymouth Sports manager Darren Stewart said: "The standard was obviously going to be high as we were competing against regional winners from all over the UK, some of which were specialist Futsal clubs. After settling down we proved we could compete with these sides and although disappointed not to reach the semi-final stage all the players can be proud of their achievements. The players will benefit from playing in such a high profile event in a fantastic venue against very talentred players and teams."

Marine Academy Plymouth Festival of Football 2011

To see pictures click here

Marine Academy hosted their annual Football Festival and attracted 90 teams over two weekends in the under 7s/8s/9s/10s/11s and 12 age groups.

May 7th saw 18 teams in the under 9 age group compete in three groups, culminating in quarter/semis and the Grand Final. A competitive tournament saw all four quarter finals go to penalties and eventually saw Tamerton overcome AFC Plympton to take the title in a close final.

On the 8th it was the turn of the under 7s, for whom many it was their first taste of playing matches. Played on a round-robin basis, 8 sides were cheered on all day by a large enthusiastic crowd and it was Marine Academy FC who eventually topped the merit table.

Running alongside the under 7s was the under 10 competition and both groups saw some exciting games resulting in semi-finals and the final which saw Marine Academy Kings victorious over Woolwell in a penalty shoot-out after a tense final saw the game finish 1-1 after extra time.

The following weekend it was the turn of the under 8s who battled it out over two groups which saw both Ivybridge sides, Callington and Marine Academy qualify to the knock-out stage. The final eventually pitched Marine Academy against Callington and two impressive sides for this age group saw an exciting final with The Academy winning 2-1.

The under 11 competition ran alongside the 8s  and saw some impressive football played by all the competing sides, and it was the Cornish which triumphed as Charlestown from near St. Austell deservedly took the title, beating Marine Academy Kings 2-0 in the final.

The last day of the festival was dedicated to the under 12s and 18 high calibre sides played out fixtures in three groups and quarter finals which eventually saw a semi-final line up of Marine Academy Juniors A and B, Kitto Parkway and Saltash. It was the host club who triumphed in both, to set up an all Marine Academy final which was decided on penalties after an exciting clash which finished 1-1 after extra time.

Darren Stewart Marine Academy’s Sports Manager said: “Due to the huge demand to open the tournament to older age groups we extended the Festival to two weekends which was an ambitious task but we are delighted with how it went. We were fortunate with the weather and the large crowds were treated to some fantastic football over the 4 days. I have to pay tribute to all the teams and the spectators for their support and to the referees who officiated so well throughout. Special thanks to all the staff and helpers at Marine Academy who worked so hard behind the scenes and on the days to ensure it went to plan”

Next season will see the Academy host the 10 year anniversary of the event.

The players have trained weekly since September and have shown a desire and commitment towards the team and fully deserve their place in the final. I’m confident they will put in a performance which will do the Academy proud.”

Gemma’s Girls Get ‘Zumbaliscious’ For Charity
Saturday 29th January was a day of excitement and high spirits for Plymouth Zumba Fitness Instructor, Gemma Stewart, and her students.

Inspired by her loyal class participants, Gemma wanted to organise an event that would be both fun and beneficial.

For a charity so close to the hearts of many, Gemma organised a sponsored two hour ‘Zumbathon’ in aid of cancer research UK.
The Zumba Fitness program is a Latin-inspired dance-fitness class, based on interval training and easy to follow steps, designed to captivate and engage its participants. It certainly did!  Gemma and the girls who supported the event on Saturday, raising in excess of £1000.00 (and still counting) for Cancer Research UK.

“I’d like to thank everyone who came along to the Zumbathon at the Marine Academy Plymouth, and to Darren Stewart and his team for making the event possible. I was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of all who attended and it has inspired me to hold more events like this in the future.” Says Gemma who holds her Zumba Fitness Classes throughout Plymouth and Tavistock.

If you’d like to get involved in the fun, ditch the workout and join the party and contact Gemma today via her website at www.zumbaliscious.co.uk or on (01752) 313696.

MAP has record number of teams through to semi finals of Devon Cup

Marine Academy Plymouth Football club has a record five sides through to the semi-finals of the prestigious Devon County Cup. The under 13s will travel to Torquay to play Maldron youth and the 14s will entertain another Torquay based side, Apollo Youth at the Academy. The Girls under 16 side will travel to play Credition and the under 18s side will host fellow Plymouth side Elburton. The Marine Academy Ladies side face Plymouth Argyle ladies side in the Women’s Senior Cup semi-final. Last season the club (playing as Tamarside) achieved three Devon Finals at various ages. Darren Stewart, the Academy’s sports manager said: “The Devon cup is a great competition to be in as it gives our players the opportunity in testing themselves against the best players and sides in the county. As a club we traditionally do well in these competitions, but to have five sides reach this stage is a great achievement. "We have been handed some tough ties in the semi-finals but hopefully a couple of teams will reach the showpiece final and mark our first season as Marine Academy Plymouth in style.” The club also achieved success with the younger age groups at the weekend, as the 9s/10s/11s and 12s achieved a clean sweep by winning all the age groups in a 5-a-side competition organised by the GOALS Soccer Centre in Plymouth.

October news

MAP Ladies into FA Cup 3rd round qualifier.

MAP Ladies earned their passage into the 3rd round of the FA Cup with a tense 2-0 victory after extra time to defeat fellow Plymouth side Marjon. Despite dominating the first half the score remained goalless with the Marjon’s keeper making save after save to frustrate the MAP side.

It was a similar story in the second half as Marjons created a number of chances, which could have snatched a dramatic victory.

The game went into extra time and as both sides tired the game looked destined for penalties, but then, with only 10 minutes to go, MAP got the vital goal when winger Emma Pemberton slid in behind the defence to slot her shot home.

With Marjons physically and mentally shattered, MAP continued to create numerous scoring chances, but had to settle for just one, as Stacy Arthur blasted home from the edge of the area to send the ladies through.

Monday’s draw is another away tie for MAP ladies when they will face Cullompton on November 14th for a place in the 4th round.

MAP Ladies FA Cup campaign off to a good start

Marine Academy Plymouth Ladies FC started the road to glory as they embarked on their FA Cup campaign. The prestigious FA Cup is the country's premier national cup competition involving both amateur and professional sides. For a chance to 'mix it' with the 'big guns' the ladies have to work through the preliminary rounds, and they got off to a great start securing their passage into the second round with a 6-2 away victory at Bristol's Purbeck.

Players match report
MAP won 6-2 to set up a 2nd Qualifying Round Tie.  MAP started to control the game from the off and kept the home side pinned back in their own half for long periods but couldn't find a way through a packed defence. The opening goal came on 15 minutes, when Corinne Potts managed to beat the offside trap and round the keeper to score from an acute angle. Four minutes later it was 2-0 when Sam Drewery scored direct from taking a corner. With a mix up within the defence, the home side pulled a goal back, however substitute Stephanie Warren restored the two goal advantage with a run from deep to beat the offside trap and finish well.

Another consolation goal was scored by the home team, although by then MAP stayed strong and three goals in the final 10 minutes rounded off a solid performance, two from Emma Pemberton and the other by Warren for her second.

Domino's Pizza Sponsors MAP under 9s

Marine Academy Plymouth Under 9s Kings team have had their new football kit sponsored by local pizza outlet Domino's Pizza of St.Budeaux. Darren Stewart Marine Academy Sports Manager said; "We have been fortunate enough to attract high profile sponsorship partners for the majority of our sides and having local companies like Domino's on board with us provides fantastic support for our under 9s side. The Domino's team including their mascot joined the young side at a recent game cheering the MAP side on to a 4-1 victory and even celebrated with the players after a goal!"
